This place is simply amazing.The brutalist concrete foodcourt area mixed with numerous curved coloured window fronts present a living timecapsule of the 1970s, something you won't find anywhere these days.Lack of natural light has always been a problem for the passage between Ryrie and Little Malop and it's surely scared off some people and businesses.Personally I kind of like the vibe, but Geelong has had a problem with empty and dark spaces in recent years, and small business isn't exactly booming.Really, the biggest issue is that it transports you from one nothing space, to another nothing space - the cinema/advertiser building through to the boring end of the Lt Malop mall that people are scared of.Going back, I remember getting my hair cut in the arcade as a child, and to be honest it's hardly changed, with the exception of a coat and sandwich shop, and that's amazing when you think about it.In that particular barber/place of hair, there was a print upon the wall that showed a time when the arcade was new and packed to the walls with Friday night shoppers - a stark contrast to present day, which sees such low foot traffic that buckets are placed out to stop the leaks on a rainy day.I actually think the Centrepoint arcade has surpassed being out of fashion, and is entering a phase of being so old that it is novel.To me it's a retro inspired throwback to the old days of shopping and worth preserving in some way.Some work to get the natural light in there would do a world of good though.I'm just waiting for council to figure out that Lt Malop street needs to be groomed for cafes and people instead of cars and concrete walls, and if that happens, the arcade will be in a prime spot to leverage it's quirkyness.Wouldn't it be great to see it full of some cool little bars or restaurants and to take in the amazing architecture and styling as you pass through.Laneway culture is making a comeback in Geelong so perhaps there's someway of splintering this place out to Union St and opening the place up a bit.Anyway, take a look at the pictures and I hope you can re-discover this fascinating beautiful place if you've forgotten about it or never stepped foot inside.It may not be around much longer.
